つれづれ･･･ミシェル・オバマのサプライズ

8月4日で米国第44代大統領オバマ氏が、49歳の誕生日を迎えたそうだ。
って、この話題を知っている日本人はどれだけいるんだろう(笑)

日本のマスコミ報道では、オバマ大統領の不人気話、何故原爆投下の日にノーベル平和賞もらっておきながら追悼に来ないとか、そんな話しか聞きませんね。

オバマ大統領が何をしているかというと、医療保険、メキシコ湾石油流出事故、雇用保険、最近の一番の関心事はウォール街のなんやらでホワイトハウスと議事堂を行ったり来たりらしいです。

さて、タイトルのミシェル･オバマのサプライズというのはですね、
オバマ氏が49歳の誕生日を迎えるのですが、旅行中でその日を一緒に迎えられないミシェル夫人が、そんなご主人にびっくりの誕生日プレゼントを贈ろうと企画したそうなんです。

で、それが先月の中旬から準備していた世界の人々からの「バースディメッセージ」というもの。
世界中から届いたメッセージは、1,266,611名分(現地時間8月4日午前中)だそうだ。
いやはや、アメリカのファーストレディは面白いことを考えるなと感心したわけです。
才女であるミシェル夫人ならではかな。

オバマ氏は、大統領候補になる前から応援している私としてはこの企画には参加せねばと･･･

On my birthday, I spent some time considering what the year ahead will bring -- a new set of challenges and opportunities, some that we can foresee and some that we cannot.

Thank you again for taking a moment to sign my card. As far as birthdays go, it is hard to imagine topping this one. But then again, Michelle always has a way of surprising me.
